Recently, i have been trying to find out what I can about my great uncle Sailoz Mukherjea, one of India's best known painters of the 20th century.
He was one of the influential artists of the evolving modern / contemporary Indian art scene and continues to be a source of inspiration long after he passed away in 1960.
The following picture shows the artist's fantastic use of colours to bring his theme alive and touch the emotions.

It is easy to see why his paintings have been declared national treasures by the Indian Government and are not allowed to be exported.
Born in 1907 in Calcutta, India, Sailoz studied art at the Government Art College in Calcutta from 1928-1932 and received his diploma in Fine Arts. He taught at the Delhi Polytechnic and later became art director at the Indian Tobacco Company. He travelled to Paris in 1937 and travelled around Europe.
In 1946 Sailoz exhibited at the Unesco World Art Exhibition in Paris, Retrospective, New Delhi in 1950, in 1951 at the Salon de Mai in Paris.
